We had a full house for our nomination meeting Wednesday evening, when members of the Ottawa West-Nepean Federal NDP acclaimed Angella MacEwen as our candidate in the upcoming Federal election this fall.

Two former candidates were on hand to nominate Angella. Chandra Pasma, our provincial candidate in 2018, and Marlene Rivier, our candidate in the 2015 Federal Election, shared the task extolling the many reasons why Angella would make a great candidate in OWN for 2019.

Angella MacEwen accepted the nomination, talking about how she learned to work hard while in the Canadian Naval Reserve, and what she has been involved in more recently as the senior economist with the Canadian Union of Public Employees. She followed up with her vision for how she and Canada's NDP could improve life for Canadians no matter what their station. See her full acceptance speech below.

On May 22 at 7 pm, the Ottawa West-Nepean NDP will name their candidate for the upcoming federal election. The meeting will be held at the Ron Kolbus Lakeside Centre, 102 Greenview Ave, Ottawa in the Atrium. Members in good standing of the Federal NDP as of April 23 and who live in the riding are eligible to vote at this meeting. All are welcome to attend.

The Ottawa West-Nepean NDP are excited that Angella MacEwen has agreed to stand as their candidate for the upcoming federal election. Angella is the senior economist for the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) and a policy fellow with the Broadbent Institute. Some may recognize her from occasional appearances on CBC News Network. You can read her full bio here. This will be an uncontested nomination.

As well as hearing from our new candidate, the meeting will also hear from Larry Rousseau, Executive Vice-President of the Canadian Labour Congress.

Larry Rousseau was elected as CLC Executive Vice-President at the CLC’s 28th Constitutional convention in May 2017. Previously he served two terms as the Regional Executive Vice-President of the Public Service Alliance of Canada’s National Capital Region, and one term as the Regional Vice-President of the PSAC’s Union of National Employees.

The Ottawa West-Nepean Federal NDP had a full house for their Spaghetti Dinner and Women in Politics panel held in the Ukrainian Orthodox Church Hall. Supporters from across the riding as well as several area ridings came out to help us get ready for our upcoming Federal Election Campaign.

On hand was Angella MacEwen, who chose our event to announce that she will be seeking the nomination to be our NDP candidate. Expect to hear more about our nomination meeting in the coming weeks.

Patrons enjoyed a satisfying meal of spaghetti with choice of salads, and apple pie à la mode for dessert, while talking politics with new and old friends.

After dinner, previous NDP Federal Candidate Marlene Rivier led a discussion of Women in Politics with our panel, former NDP MPP & Minister Evelyn Gigantes, political commentator Kathleen Monk, and City Councillor Theresa Kavanagh. The panelists talked about their own challenges and triumphs in the political sphere, and offered advice to other women who might be considering entering politics themselves.
