At their online nomination meeting, New Democrats in Ottawa West-Nepean selected Chandra Pasma as their NDP candidate for the 2022 provincial election. Chandra is an anti-poverty activist and Canadian Union of Public Employees policy researcher.
In 2018, Chandra came within 175 votes of winning Ottawa West-Nepean. Unfortunately, the riding has not been well served by the Ford government and residents are eager for change.
Special guest and Leader of the Ontario NDP, Andrea Horwath, praised Chandra Pasma for her energy, her innovative ideas and commitment to the community. “She's an amazing candidate. And with your help, she’s going to be the next MPP for Ottawa West-Nepean. “
In nominating Chandra, Theresa Kavanagh, who is the Ottawa City Councillor for Bay Ward, remarked “There’s so many good reasons to have Chandra in office. She knows her issues and can take on anything. I’m thrilled that she’s agreed to be the candidate again.”
Susan Gardner, President of the Ottawa Carleton Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario, said “Chandra is active in our community and she takes action in our community. She has walked with our education workers on the picket lines. She is both brilliant and accessible. She has the qualities of a successful leader. She is reasonable, calm and thoughtful.“
In her remarks, Chandra thanked the many members who showed up virtually, saying “Ottawa West—Nepean families need hope after an incredibly difficult year. I’m running with Andrea Horwath’s New Democrats again because I want to be part of the NDP government that fixes long-term care, reduces class sizes, and puts a stop to hallway medicine — especially at our overstretched Queensway-Carleton Hospital.”
