The riding of Ottawa West-Nepean was well represented at the Federal NDP 2018 Convention at the Shaw Centre this past week-end. With nearly 2,000 delegates in attendance, the convention was the largest ever according to organizers. Ottawa West-Nepean sent its entire entitlement of five delegates plus one youth delegate, and in addition sent several members who went on credentials from other ridings as well as members who volunteered to help out at the event.
Ottawa West-Nepean sent numerous resolutions to convention. One of those created by OWN members, 6-05-18 LGBTQI2S+ Initiatives - Human Rights, was debated and passed by delegates. Several resolutions that our riding put forward along with other ridings and groups also passed including:
- 1-07-18 Public Basic banking services to all Canadians
- 3-18-18 Post-Secondary Education
- 7-45-18 Modernization and Democratization of Convention Resolution Process
Convention delegates also chose new executive members for the Federal party, who are:
- President: Matthieu Vick
- Vice-president: Thadsha Navaneethan
- Treasurer: Sussanne Skidmore
In between policy debate, there were rousing speeches by current NDP leader Jagmeet Singh, Ontario NDP leader Andrea Horwath, past NDP leader Ed Broadbent with former MP Olivia Chow, and many others. We also had like-minded political leaders like the UK Labour Party's Iain McNicoll to give us new perspectives, and heard from community leaders like City of Toronto councillor Mike Layton, National Women's March on Washington co-founder Tamika Mallory and co-founder and former member of A Tribe Called Red Ian Campeau.
